{"id":1183,"date":"2015-05-15T00:35:03","date_gmt":"2015-05-15T00:35:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/marcmangel.net\/?page_id=1183"},"modified":"2015-05-15T00:35:03","modified_gmt":"2015-05-15T00:35:03","slug":"shlach-lecha-5765","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/marcmangel.net\/?page_id=1183","title":{"rendered":"Shlach-Lecha (5765)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Drash Cards for Shlach-Lecha (5765)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>by Marc Mangel<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Remember\u00a0<em>Fiddler on the Roof<\/em> in which Tevye often says &#8220;On the one hand&#8230;on the other hand&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Duality is the great strength of Judaism. \u00a0We move between being angels and animals; we have blood lust but our best stage is vegetarian<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 That relates to God&#8217;s omniscience,\u00a0and free will.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 We have problematics texts: Ch 13, v 1; Ch 14, v 11, v 27: \u00a0If God omniscient, why send out the spies? Why ask Moses questions?<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The Chazal note that the Torah says &#8220;Send out spies\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">for yourself&#8221;. \u00a0<\/span> God knows what will happen, is not commanding it, and does not choose the spies.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Nachsoni writes &#8220;Thus, HaShem issued his command only to allow free will to operation. His decision to let the Israelites be deceived constituted prior knowledge of their fate, but that did not nullify their ability to choose&#8221; and that &#8220;No HaShem, but they themselves were responsible for their sin&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 I note that it need not have happened that way.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 God asks questions a lot. \u00a0Of Adam and Eve: why hide? \u00a0Of Cain: where&#8217;s Abel. \u00a0Of Abraham: Why is Sarah laughing.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Rashi says that God&#8217;s questions leave open praye and teshuvah, as in today&#8217;s parsha<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Rav Joseph Ozarowski writes &#8220;God wants to give us opportunity to engage in dialogue because teshuvah is preferable to punishment. And even when things seems so bad that there is no hope prayer is still worthwhile and effective&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 That is, God is\u00a0omniscient AND can be surprised by our teshuvah.
