{"id":1631,"date":"2015-09-01T00:40:27","date_gmt":"2015-09-01T00:40:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/marcmangel.net\/?page_id=1631"},"modified":"2015-09-01T00:40:27","modified_gmt":"2015-09-01T00:40:27","slug":"pekudei-5763","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/marcmangel.net\/?page_id=1631","title":{"rendered":"Pekudei (5763)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Drash Cards for Pekudei (5763)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>by Marc Mangel<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 We have a discussion of the materials used by Bezalel in making the Miskan and instructions for consecration in Ch 40, v 9: to consecrate with oil.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 My first point: \u00a0the Miskan is very holy and the holiness and the holiness involves contact (Ch 29, v 37, Ch 30, v 29)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Second point: \u00a0the root of the word for santification (Kee-dash-ta) is Ko-desh. \u00a0Jastrow&#8217;s dictionary (1903) defined Ko-desh as to &#8220;be cut off, separated, become pure, sacred, holy&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 I also learned that Ke-desh is one of the cities of refuge, with a natural interpretation for the name,.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Holiness mean to separate. \u00a0When we had the Miskan we could separate in space. \u00a0We don&#8217;t have that any more.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 So we can separate in time. Friday night candles and Havdallah are moments of separation between the profane and holy, but what about in between?<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Reform Judaism was founded in the 1840s with three conferences.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 1846: Is the essence of Shabbat consecration of the divine or cessation of work? \u00a0We still wrestle with this, as long as we are not strictly orthodox.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Is the holiness of Shabbat contagious &#8212; if we do a usual act (e.g. get haircut, go to the farmers&#8217; market, \u00a0or go shopping) does it somehow become a holy act because we did it on Shabbat?<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 If one is Orthodox, the answer is clearly not. \u00a0For us, it is a good question.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 My opinion is no.
