The Talmud tells us that the Temple was destroyed by Sinat Chinam (senseless hatred), which we will examine in terms of the Cities of Refuge<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 We have Cities of Refuge, based on the basic postulate that the Divine Presence cannot abide in a lang polluted by murder (Ch 35, v 33).<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The 6 Cities of Refuge are for involuntary homicide and are based on an amazing set of principles<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Only the guilty party is involved; no other family member may be punished.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Guilt is determined by intention and involuntary homicide is not put to death. The decision of voluntary\/involuntary is made by the state (a national tribunal) not the bereaved<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 No ransom is acceptable<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 For us today. \u00a0Ibn Ben Bachya in\u00a0<em>Duties of the Heart<\/em> uses this as a proof text that a sin is greater if both heart and body do it.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Another implication: \u00a0A mitzvah performed without intention of doing it for the sake of heaven has no<a class=\"acakzmyhrq\" style=\"z-index: 2147483647;\" title=\"Click to Continue &gt; by CinemaPro1.2\" href=\"#51131176\"> reward<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cdncache-a.akamaihd.net\/items\/it\/img\/arrow-10x10.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The Lubavitcher Rebbe wrote about this parsha: \u00a0All of us can be signposts for fellow Jews looking for spiritual refuge by listening, talking, showing them and even bringing them here to synagogue.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 R.
