{"id":194,"date":"2013-11-04T01:52:03","date_gmt":"2013-11-04T01:52:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/marcmangel.net\/?page_id=194"},"modified":"2013-11-04T01:53:10","modified_gmt":"2013-11-04T01:53:10","slug":"misphatim-5771-2010","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/marcmangel.net\/?page_id=194","title":{"rendered":"Mishpatim 5771 (2010)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A Drash for Mishpatim 5771 \u2013 A Recycled Idea, Told in a Different Way<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>by Marc Mangel<\/p>\n<p>A longer than usual drash and somewhat political<\/p>\n<p>Next: Some things we said in the 60s<\/p>\n<p>Keep the faith, baby<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re not part of the solution, you are part of the problem<\/p>\n<p>Different strokes for different folks<\/p>\n<p>Today is the first day of the rest of your life<\/p>\n<p>A Song We Listened To \u201cAlice\u2019s Restaurant\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It recounts a true Thanksgiving Day adventure as a\u00a0protest against the Vietnam War\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Conscription\">draft<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On Thanksgiving, November 25, 1965, the 18-year-old Guthrie and his friend Richard Robbins, 19, were arrested\u00a0for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Litter\">illegally dumping<\/a>\u00a0some of Alice&#8217;s garbage after discovering that the town\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Landfill\">dump<\/a>\u00a0was closed for the holiday. Two days later, they pled guilty in court before a blind\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Judge\">judge<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Fastforward to 1967: Guthrie&#8217;s being called up for the draft, and the surreal bureaucracy at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_City\">New York City<\/a>\u00a0induction center at 39\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Whitehall_Street\">Whitehall Street<\/a>.<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alice's_Restaurant#cite_note-1\">[2]<\/a>\u00a0Because of Guthrie&#8217;s criminal record for littering, he is first sent to the Group W Bench, where those draftees wait who cannot be inducted except under a &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moral_waiver\">moral waiver<\/a>&#8220;, then outright rejected as unfit for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Armed_forces\">military service<\/a> because of this criminal record.<\/p>\n<p>Guthrie\u2019s advice \u201cIf you\u2019re in a situation like that there&#8217;s only one thing you can do and that&#8217;s walk into the shrink wherever you are ,just walk in say &#8220;Shrink, You can get anything you want, at Alice&#8217;s restaurant.&#8221;.\u00a0 And walk out.\u00a0 You know, if one person, just one person does it they may think he&#8217;s really sick and they won&#8217;t take him. And three people do it, three, can you imagine, three people walking in singin a bar of Alice&#8217;s Restaurant and walking out. They may think it&#8217;s an organization.\u00a0 And can you, can you imagine fifty people a day, I said\u00a0fifty people a day walking in singin a bar of Alice&#8217;s Restaurant and walking out.\u00a0 And friends they may thinks it&#8217;s a movement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Imagine this<\/p>\n<p>1)\u00a0\u00a0 If one of us goes home tonight or tomorrow and gives to the HFLA then it is tzedaka<\/p>\n<p>2)\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0And if three of us do it, they may think it is organized<\/p>\n<p>3)\u00a0\u00a0 But imagine if each one of us gave to HFLA and wrote to two people we know \u2013 outside of Santa Cruz \u2013 this message<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYesterday [or this last Shabbat if you are writing later in the week] was Shabbat Misphatim.\u00a0 In honor of the great principle of free loans, I encourage you to send a donation, size does not matter, to your local HFLA, and send this message on to two more people, one in your community and one outside\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine if we did that. We\u2019d have The Mishpatim Movement.<\/p>\n<p>And if you don\u2019t want to be part of the movement:\u00a0 This week Chabad sent out a drash about Mishpatim that noted \u201cGive a loan and open the Heavenly Gates\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Today is indeed the first day of the rest of our lives.
