{"id":2365,"date":"2016-05-31T00:04:28","date_gmt":"2016-05-31T00:04:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/marcmangel.net\/?page_id=2365"},"modified":"2016-05-31T00:04:28","modified_gmt":"2016-05-31T00:04:28","slug":"ki-teitzei-5761","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/marcmangel.net\/?page_id=2365","title":{"rendered":"Ki Teitzei (5761)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Drash Cards for Ki Teitzei (5761)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>by Marc Mangel<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 This parsha has several moral rules, including provisions for women captured in battle, leaving an estate, and dealing with a rebellious son.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 But it also emphasizes that there is\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">true evil<\/span>: Amalek (Ch 25, v 17) , which comes from an analysis of the different kinds of evil.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Doing so, the Torah becomes a revolutionary document because it \u00a0tells us (Ch 23, v 8) not to abhor the Edomite; Rashi says this is because they were our hosts<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Maimonides notes that there are 72 positive and 72 negative commandments in this parsh: 7+2 +7+ 2 = 18. \u00a0About this, Nehama says &#8220;This sidra surpasses all others&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Torah for our life today (which I has not changed,when I type these words in 5776): a refugee boat on the way to Australia capsizes and was rescued by Norwegians fishing, but Australia would not let them land.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The Torah (Ch 23, v 16) tells us how to treat escaped (from non-Jews, according to the classical interpretation) slaves. \u00a0Today&#8217;s refugees are escaped slaves.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Indeed, Pesach teaches us that there are many kinds of slavery, so there are many kinds of escaped slaves. \u00a0About this, Rabbi Nachman said that we must feel another&#8217;s troubles in our heart.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Refugees\/slaves: \u00a0are poor; look different from us; speak differently from us; and act differently from us\/<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 How are we to receive these strange and different people? \u00a0The Torah tells us that we should let them dwell in our midst.
