His father answered \u201cNow, one has to begin doing <em>teshuvah<\/em>\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>That is, Yom Kippur is a beginning not an end. <em>Teshuvah <\/em>is a process (repentance \u2013 an inappropriate translation \u2013 is a single event of \u201cI\u2019m sorry\u201d vs the continual \u201cI\u2019m changing\u201d).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Think about it: In Elul we had a month of looking backwards at our failures in the last year, feeling remorse.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Between Rosh HaShannah and erev Yom Kippur we have the opportunity to formulate our <em>teshuvah <\/em>goals for the coming year \u2013 still feeling remorse about the past, but slowly letting it go.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>On Yom Kippur, we finalize our <em>teshuvah <\/em>goals, close out the remorse, and end the day with positive resolve going forward.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>But where do we find guidance and support as we go forward?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The rest of the holidays don\u2019t help so much \u2013 we are transitioning to a time of joy and celebration, rather than introspection, as we begin Sukkot.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>But today\u2019s Torah portion does help. In the prologue to his song, Moses says<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>(Ch 32, v 2) \u201cMay my discourse come down as the rain. My speech distill as the dew. Let showers on young growth, like droplets on the grass\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>What we have done thus far is plant the seed of our <em>teshuvah. <\/em> Now, like other seeds that need rain, our seed of <em>Teshuvah<\/em> needs nourishment \u2013 the Torah and Mitzvot \u2013 and our tending to grow and flourish. That is our job now.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>While preparing this drash, the following idea \u2013 which I will propose to the new Congress \u2013 occurred to me i)\u00a0That we have a national month of introspection about our failings for the previous year.
