Books and Grandchildren<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>I sit in my book room<\/p>\n

(in the garage, like the book room of Karl Popper)<\/p>\n

I am flummoxed.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

There are no strangers here. Acquaintances, friends,<\/p>\n

close friends, dearest friends, and near lovers<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But shelf space \u2013 unlike love \u2013 is limited and I face the<\/p>\n

the challenge of a break up<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It should be easy to, but I find it not to be so.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In life, I have lost contact with many acquaintances,<\/p>\n

but with these books it is different because of the uncertain future.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Will a grand child sometime show interest in the history of ecology (Crowcroft, \u00a0Elton\u2019s Ecologists)<\/em>, develop A Passion for DNA <\/em>(Watson), strive to understand \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 biography of our planet (Lovelock, The Ages of Gaia)<\/em>?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Will I one day be asked \u201cSaba, do you have a book on scientific revolutions? (Dyson, \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Sun, the Genome, and the Internet<\/em>\u201d) or \u201cSaba what are complex adaptive \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 systems?\u201d (Strogatz, Sync)<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Will they ask \u201cSaba \u2013 when did Wellington raise people from the ranks?\u201d Richard \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Sharpe is the answer<\/p>\n

But what to do with the others?<\/p>\n
