When I was a lad, we learned a poem<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are the saddest of possible words:<\/p>\n

\u2018Tinkers to Evers to Chance.\u2019<\/p>\n

Trio of bear cubs, and fleeter than birds\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Franklin Pierce Adams, great as poet, failed as a seer<\/p>\n

\u201cBaseball\u2019s Sad Lexicon\u201d<\/p>\n

–\u201cThat Double Play Again\u201d —<\/p>\n

penned in 1910<\/p>\n

Only one World Series<\/p>\n

since the Cubbies had won it all<\/p>\n

We waited.<\/p>\n

We waited.<\/p>\n

And then waited some more.<\/p>\n

To fear once again defeat not victory<\/p>\n

We expected heartbreak.<\/p>\n

But that was not to be.<\/p>\n

We will never know why.<\/p>\n

But we do know how.<\/p>\n

Russell to Baez to Rizzo<\/p>\n

A trio to match Tinker, and Evers, and Chance<\/p>\n

Or perhaps<\/p>\n

Bryant to Baez to Rizzo<\/p>\n

Another to match Tinker, and Evers, and Chance<\/p>\n

Names that are \u201cheavy with nothing but trouble\u201d<\/p>\n

like those of Tinker, Evers, and Chance<\/p>\n
