{"id":303,"date":"2013-11-28T00:24:21","date_gmt":"2013-11-28T00:24:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/marcmangel.net\/?page_id=303"},"modified":"2013-11-28T00:24:21","modified_gmt":"2013-11-28T00:24:21","slug":"rosh-hashannah-5769-2008","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/marcmangel.net\/?page_id=303","title":{"rendered":"Rosh HaShannah 5769 (2008)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A Drash for Rosh HaShannah 5769 (2008)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>by Marc Mangel<\/p>\n<p>Today we wish each other a good and sweet year, and in another 10 days, that we will be inscribed in the book of life.\u00a0\u00a0 Teshuvah is the means by which we can achieve these.<\/p>\n<p>Teshuvah means to return, not to repent for which there is a different word in Hebrew (charatah). Just how do we return and get closer to God, rather than\u00a0 only repent?<\/p>\n<p>To be sure, we all can look back on last year and repent the mistakes that we have made. This is, in fact,\u00a0 one leg of the stool of Teshuvah.<\/p>\n<p>We can also look back at the mitzvoth we completed but did not complete with intention and attention\u00a0 but rather did mechanically or in a rush or half-heartedly.\u00a0 This too is repentance and is the second leg of the stool of Teshuvah.<\/p>\n<p>The third leg of the stool of Teshuvah\u00a0 is the mitzvot that we will do in the coming year (and years).<\/p>\n<p>The sages teach that the intention and attention \u2013 thinking about a mitzvah and its meaning \u2013 provides the spirituality of the mitzvah and the performance of mitzvah itself\u00a0 provides the connection to essence of God.<\/p>\n<p>The third leg of the stool of Teshuvah is all the mitvot that we will perform \u2013 with intention and attention\u2013 in this coming year.<\/p>\n<p>An example: Tzedaka means righteousness or justice, not charity for which there is a different word in Hebrew .<\/p>\n<p>We can give Tzedaka in a mindless manner (just writing the check because it is the first of the month) or a begrudging manner &#8212;\u00a0 or we can give it with intention and attention as a duty to God and as justice to those who are in need.\u00a0 And it is with the latter that writing the check becomes Teshuvah.<\/p>\n<p>May we all have a good and sweet year, made so by recognizing that every moment is a mitvah moment and that the mitva performed with intention and attention and is the one bringing us closer to God.<\/p>\n<p>Shanah Tovah<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Drash for Rosh HaShannah 5769 (2008) by Marc Mangel Today we wish each other a good and sweet year, and in another 10 days, that we will be inscribed in the book of life.\u00a0\u00a0 Teshuvah is the means by which we can achieve these.
