The Guilt is Ours Too<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He had once been nameless and faceless<\/p>\n

just another student at the junior high<\/p>\n

a boy on a bike<\/p>\n

filled with life and hope<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And then his face appeared<\/p>\n

on the front page<\/p>\n

no longer nameless<\/p>\n

but a young man<\/p>\n

murdered<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

First they beat him<\/p>\n

kicked him<\/p>\n

did he scream<\/p>\n

did he cry<\/p>\n

surely he felt alone<\/p>\n

and felt<\/p>\n

fear<\/p>\n

where were we?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He haunts me now<\/p>\n

Does he haunt them<\/p>\n

those young bastards<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Then they pushed him<\/p>\n

Pushed him into<\/p>\n

a train<\/p>\n

And the train killed<\/p>\n

him.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He haunts me<\/p>\n

I see him stumble<\/p>\n

in the dark<\/p>\n

searching for shelter<\/p>\n

in a storm of blows<\/p>\n

blinded by blood<\/p>\n

and blows to<\/p>\n

the head<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Feeling fear<\/p>\n

Feeling so alone<\/p>\n

Surely we failed him.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

How much hate<\/p>\n

how much anger<\/p>\n

had they felt<\/p>\n

as they kicked and beat<\/p>\n

and pushed him<\/p>\n

into the train that<\/p>\n

killed him.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And we?<\/p>\n

We shall shake our heads<\/p>\n

bemoan the “use of<\/p>\n

alcohol by teens”<\/p>\n

arrogantly claim “but<\/p>\n

they had 3rd and B”<\/p>\n

and now young<\/p>\n

killers<\/p>\n

sit and wait<\/p>\n

but<\/p>\n

we failed him<\/p>\n

and the guilt is ours too.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

for \u00a0a murdered young man, whom I never<\/p>\n

knew<\/p>\n
