The Blood Will Not Wash Off (October 1973)<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We are in midst of war<\/p>\n

the sounds of war and<\/p>\n

the blackness, or the flashes<\/p>\n

surround all of us<\/p>\n

the colors and limps of war<\/p>\n

are without us and within us<\/p>\n

we are truly in the midst of war<\/p>\n

gruesome and cruel<\/p>\n

insensitive and blind<\/p>\n

war<\/p>\n

but when —<\/p>\n

but when peace will come<\/p>\n

or when silence at least will come<\/p>\n

then our souls<\/p>\n

will be at war<\/p>\n

for the blood will not<\/p>\n

wash off our hands<\/p>\n

nor will it wash off anyone’s<\/p>\n

hands<\/p>\n

the blood of haughtiness<\/p>\n

the blood of selfrighteousness<\/p>\n

the blood of bigotry<\/p>\n

the blood of thoughtlessness<\/p>\n

the blood will not wash off<\/p>\n

it will stay<\/p>\n

that blood will stain our<\/p>\n

clothes and the clothes of our<\/p>\n

children<\/p>\n

we may try<\/p>\n

indeed for a thousand years<\/p>\n

but the blood will not<\/p>\n

wash off<\/p>\n

the blood of conceit<\/p>\n

the blood of deception and of selfdeception<\/p>\n

the blood of intransigence<\/p>\n

the blood will not wash off<\/p>\n

and if<\/p>\n

when that peace does finally come<\/p>\n

we sit and talk and<\/p>\n

make a good peace<\/p>\n

that peace too will be<\/p>\n

stained wityh blood<\/p>\n

and the blood will not wash off<\/p>\n
