In Hirsch it ends \u201cI God\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 &nbsp;<em>Sefer\nHaMitzvot <\/em>&nbsp;also says \u201cThis mitzvah is\nin force everywhere t every time\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 We\nknow it best because Hillel&nbsp; turned it\ninto a negative mitzvah \u201cWhat is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow person.\nThis is the entire Torah; the rest is commentary\u201d.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Susan\nreminded me that this was behind the driver of Eged buses when we lived in\nIsrael in the early 1970s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 The\nArizal (Isaac Luria) instituted the tradition of saying this verse three times\na day, before davening.&nbsp; In the Breslov\nsiddur, it is there in its entirety. In the Chabad siddur, the decision was\nmade to say it just with Sachrit, without the \u201cI am God\u201d at the end, since the\nverse flows through the entire day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Two of\nmy sources [Nachsoni\u2019s compilation <em>Studies\nin the Weekly Parsha<\/em> and Ludmir\u2019s <em>Torah\nGems<\/em>] had the same commentary from Rambam, which roughly goes like this\n(different translations):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a\nmitzvah to visit the sick, to comfort the mourners, to bury the dead, to\nfacilitate the marriage of a bride, to escort guests, to deal with all aspects\nof burial, etc.&nbsp; All these are <em>gemilat chasidim &#8212;&nbsp; <\/em>deeds of lovingkindness \u2013 performed by\npersonal action, for which there is no set measure\u2026[T[hey are included\nin the general commandment \u201cyou shall love your neighbor as yourself\u201d.&nbsp; All those things which you want others to do\nfor you, you must do for your fellow in Torah and mitzvot. These are charitable\nacts that are done with the body, and there is no limit as to what can be accomplished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 This\nis how we create a dwelling place for God in this world.&nbsp; You cannot love your fellow as yourself in an\nabstract way \u2013 thus must be actual, physical deeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Now,\nit is easy to understand how these kinds of social mitzvot can reduced to the\nlove of one\u2019s fellow.&nbsp; But how about the\nmitzvot that do not relate to one\u2019s fellow?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 The\nBaal Shem Tov said \u201cJust as a person loves himself in spite of the faults that\nhe knows he has, so he must love his neighbor in spite of the neighbor having\nfaults.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 R.\nDavid Zvi Hoffman explains that \u201cI am God\u201d is added at the end because God is\nsaying \u201cI am God, who created all of you, and it is I who demand the unity of\nthe human species\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 We\nachieve this unity by thinking at a Divine level about others \u2013 we need to\nelevate our perspective to that of the Divine soul.&nbsp; In the <em>Tayna,\n<\/em>&nbsp;the Alter Rebbe says that such\nelevation is the goal of all of the Torah\u2019s commandments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 And\nthis is how Hillel could say \u201cWhat is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow.\nThis is the entire Torah; the rest is commentary\u201d.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 If we\noperationalize this commandment with physical acts that show our commitment and\nlove to others and raise our spirit to see others as part of the unity of God\u2019s\ncreation, then everything else is indeed commentary.&nbsp; Not easy, but a goal for all of us.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Drash Cards for Kedoshim (5779) by Marc Mangel \u2022 According to Sefer HaMitzvot there are 51 mitzvot in this parsha; 13 positive and 38 negative \u2022 I am going to focus on the positive mitzvah in Ch 19, v 18 [READ IN HEBREW]: \u201cYou must love your fellow as yourself; I am God\u201d.
