Drash Cards for Naso (5779)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 55th<\/sup>\nanniversary of my Bar Mitzvah.  Please\nstay for lunch; it is my \u201cBar Mitzvah Party\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 I thought to talk about my\nBar Mitzvah but Susan said \u201cYou\u2019ve already talked about your Bar Mitzvah and\ndon\u2019t have a story to match Shlomo\u2019s chicken, so just give a regular\ndrash\u201d.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Regular drash it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Today we read all of\nChapter 7.  At lunch last week, everyone\nwas talking about the length of the assignments, how they thought about asking\nTammi for a different one, and then discovered that all of the assignments were\nlong!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Here\u2019s why.  After a 12 line introduction, we have the\noffering of the princes for the dedication each day. Each prince\u2019s offering\ntakes about 5 verses (so 10 verses to cover two princes), and then a conclusion\nof 15 verses.  So about 90 verses in\ntotal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 But here\u2019s the deal: on\nthe surface, it seems that each prince brings exactly the same thing. For\nexample, they all begin  their offerings with\n\u201cone silver bowl weighing 130 shekels, one silver sprinkling basin\nweighing  70 shekels, both filled with\nfine flour mixed with olive oil for a grain-offering\u201d, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 On the surface,  the princes shared a common significance of\nthe offerings.  For example,  chazal teach that the silver bowl alluded to\nAdam (because of gematria \u2018silver bowl\u2019 about the number of years he lived\n[930] and its weight was the age at which he had children). The silver basin\nalluded to Noah, again because of gematria (one silver basin = 520; 500 is the\nyear at which Noah had children, and 20 is the 20 years preceding the decree of\nthe flood).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022Chazal also teach that he\nprince paid for his offering himself \u2013 he did not collect money from the tribe,\neven though the offering was made on behalf of the whole tribe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 However, slightly beneath\nthe surface the meaning of each offering for each prince is different.  For example, the silver bowl:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Nachson –alludes\nto Shlomo and Mashiach<\/li>
  2. Netanel\u2014alludes\nto the Torah<\/li>
  3. Eliav \u2013alludes\nto the sea<\/li>
  4. Elitzur\n\u2013alluding to how Reuben thwarted the plans of his brothers to kill Joseph<\/li>
  5. Shelumiel \u2013\nalludes to the courtyard that encompassed the Taberncle<\/li>
  6. Eliasaf \u2013\nalludes to Yocheved<\/li>
  7. Elishama \u2013\nalludes to Jacob<\/li>
  8. Gamliel \u2013also\nalludes to Jacob<\/li>
  9. Avidan \u2013alludes\nto Rachel<\/li>
  10. Achiezer \u2013 alludes\nto the bread of the Nazir\u2019s offering<\/li>
  11. Pagiel \u2013alludes\nto the 70 nations descended from Noah<\/li>
  12. Achira \u2013\nalludes to Sarah<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    I do not have time to go\nthrough the proof text for these.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u2022 What is the message for\nus? I think that there are three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u2022 First, in the same way\nthat each prince brought the same offering, which had a fundamental commonality\nbut also meant something different to each one of them because of who they\nwere, we come together every week to say the same prayers  but every time we are different. Thus our\ninteractions with the prayers change because we change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u2022 Second, in the same way\nthat he prince paid himself for the offering, we can delegate prayer to anyone\nelse \u2013 we must bring the offering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u2022 Third, the princes could\nnot change the offering to God; they could not change God by their offering,\nbut they could change themselves. Similarly, \nwhen we pray if our goal is to change God, our prayers are likely to\nfail. If we pray to change ourselves, we have a much better chance of\nsucceeding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u2022 Shabbat shalom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u00a0\u2022 And a PS:\u00a0 During Kiddush, my friend Jai Dravich told me that in the Art Scroll Chumash, there is a note saying that although the princes gave a lot, they were so rich that they could easily afford to give.
