It’s Hard to Be Almost Three
By Marc Mangel
[To be read to Isaac on August 16, 2017 – from Saba and Grammie]
It’s hard, so hard, to be almost three.
It’s hard because everyone has more words
Where do they get them?
Or worse, they don’t understand my word
Where did it come from?
It’s hard, so hard, to be almost three
Because everyone has longer legs
They walk faster
They reach things better
And hide things where I cannot get them!
It’s hard to be almost three
And need to have a nap
When nobody else does
Why are they not tired?
And when I sleep — that’s when all the good stuff happens
I am sure of that!
It’s hard, so hard, to be almost three
When sprinkles come at breakfast
And I know that I need more
Even though the food may ‘just look fine’!
What do they know of sprinkles?
It’s hard to be almost three
When in the car there is a shout
“Hey, look at that!!!!”
And all I see is the side of my car seat!!
It’s hard, so hard, to be almost three
And see Asher become a Grant Grizzly
How cool is that!
But now to have to go to school myself
Yes, it’s hard, so hard, to be almost three.
But tomorrow, I’ll be three
Then things will be better, I am sure of that!
But still, perhaps….
…perhaps one day it will be hard to be almost four!
